Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are available in conjunction with both Otley College and Writtle College.

Apprenticeships are an excellent way to train for NVQ and BHS exams whilst gaining valuable work experience and a small wage.

Comprehensive training is given in the form of riding lessons, stable management lectures, practicals and assessments. Juliet Penwarden is an NVQ Assessor enabling assessments to be carried out on site and ensuring rapid progression.

Monitoring visits are carried out by College staff at approximately 6-8 week intervals to check progress.

Past students have a 100% pass rate and have all gained employment easily in a wide variety of jobs including:

  • Riding instructors
  • Grooms on top competition yards
  • Metropolitan police
  • Associated jobs in retail, insurance and the veterinary profession.

Apprenticeships lead to NVQ level 2, BHS stages 1 and 2 (optional), riding and road safety certificate, first aid certificate, plus key skills qualification. The course is tailor-made to individual needs but expected duration is approximately 1 year depending on age and past experience.

Students can progress to the Advanced Apprenticeship if desired. This enables students to gain an NVQ level 3 (the equivalent of 3 A levels) plus BHS Stage 3 and PTT and involves some supervisory work.

Government funding is available for 16 to 24 year olds.

Occasional work experience placements are available – contact Juliet for further details.

Short Courses

Short courses are available to prepare for BHS exams and Pony Club exams.
